When people can do the same job under ten different job titles at five different employers, it’s difficult for team leads to know the ambitions of their team members and ensure that they’re growing on their chosen path. To combat that, I designed a career path that allowed our agile UX designers—who, by necessity, must be generalist—to focus their career development. This also allowed us to recognize achievement of team members who gained expertise in one or more areas (previously, earning a “senior” designation required magical unicorn skills across all of the disciplines we practiced, which was an impractical and unkind expectation).
The career pathing consisted of options for focused growth in interaction design, design research, and front-end development. I cannot share the full document publicly, unfortunately, but it is available upon request.
